This video[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-3X5hIFXYU] was brought to my attention recently. I watched it with the concern due anything sent to me by someone I respect.
Having said that I think that I do find this video more then a bit alarmist. Let me espalin. To me Islam is no different then Christianity. Yes Islam has its sharia law, but Christians right here in America have their Ku Klux Klan, Army of God, and Westboro Baptist Church. To be afraid of Islam because of a small sect of Islam is to be afraid of Christianity because of a small sect of Christianity.
At the risk
of painting with a broad brush and alienating some of my more "Christian"
libertarian friends I say this: Christians oppress women (abortion, birth
control, etc.) as do Muslims. Christians are rabidly antigay, as are Muslims.
Christians would love to see their moral code enacted into and venerated by
secular law, as do Muslims. So help me out here... Other then the churches
becoming mosques. How does this impact my life? Irrational fanatics are irrational
fanatics no mater what side of the crazy pool they come from.
The key to our success is to (and what I hope that we accomplish in our own small way) keep alive the torch or reason, science, objectivism, and enlightenment thought. It doesn't matter what the majority religion is as long as religion is relegated to where it belongs, in peoples private practice. Now that I think about it perhaps I am a touch scared of the Muslims when I think about the dismal job that we have done maintaining the enlightenment value of the separation of church and state in regard to Christianity. Perhaps this is just because I prefer the devil that I know over the one I don't.
At any rate, it doesn't matter because the demographics are a changing. In fact they are always changing. Just keep the torch of reason alive and be objective and consistent. Hold human freedom as your highest value, and scientific rigor as your constant companion and you can't go wrong.
